What happened
An online casino operator running seven websites, including allbritishcasino.com, casinocasino.com and hypercasino.com, will pay £900,000 after a Gambling Commission investigation found it held up customers’ withdrawals. The money is paid as part of a regulatory settlement.
How withdrawals were held up
One of its terms said customers could only request one withdrawal at a time, and could not request another until the first had been authorised. The Commission said this term was unfair under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.
For some customers, the operator also manually reviewed every fifth or tenth withdrawal, making them supply extra information before they were paid. Commission rules say a withdrawal request must not trigger a demand for extra information if the operator could have asked for it earlier.
Other failings
Its money-laundering controls relied mainly on financial thresholds and sampling, rather than on each customer’s level of risk. It also did not follow its own due-diligence steps, including for newly opened bank accounts and for funds not shown to come from work, a business or savings.
Safer-gambling alerts for signs such as time spent gambling or failed deposits were switched on for some of its websites but not all of them, and it had no way to check whether its interactions with customers actually worked.
What this means if your withdrawal is delayed
You should not be asked for extra documents when you withdraw if the operator could have asked for them earlier. Terms that limit how you can withdraw your money can be unfair.
If a withdrawal is held up, complain to the operator first. If that does not settle it, take it to the independent dispute resolution service named in the operator’s terms.

What the Commission said
Sue Young, the Commission’s Executive Director of Operations, said: “A basic expectation is that when you have winnings you can withdraw those swiftly.”
